A Little About Me:
I am the oldest of 5 children and we were not really very well off financially or relationally when I was growing up. My dad was in the Air Force for a short time and then a fireman for the next 30 years. My mother went to work after my youngest sister was born when I was about 7. I remember that my dad usually worked 2 - 3 jobs just to help support us. I started working full time when I was 15 years old and my dad ran off with a woman 5 years older than me! I really never considered going to college out of high school since I already had a job and had joined the Marine Corp Reserves. I was in construction for about 8 years before going to work for Frito-Lay. I was working in the plant at Frito-Lay packaging Funyuns and remember thinking that I did not want to retire doing that. It paid pretty well for a job that did not require formal education, but I wanted more out of life.
We had computer systems in the plant that no one maintained and I became interested in them since our maintenance guys did not fix computer systems. I started to learn how to maintain them and my manager said I should go college to get a degree in computers since Frito-Lay paid 80% tuition reimbursement. I did go to college, obtained my degree in Management Information Systems, and changed careers to Information Systems in my mid-30’s. This is when I really began to understand the power of setting and attaining goals. My first Dallas IT Position - I accepted the first offer I received after graduation and started out programming, which I hated. Then my manager noticed my dislike with programming and made me a Project Lead - I flourished in this position because it was more “me”. During this time I met a contract programmer that turned me on to Brian Tracy. He let me borrow a tape set called “The Psychology of Selling” by Brian Tracy. This began my journey of self-improvement.
When I rolled off of that project and onto another as a programmer again, I was horrible at programming because I had been away from it so long as a Project Lead and the company ended up laying me off. I started with GTE 3 weeks later in IT Production Support, which I very much enjoyed because it involved resolving data, database, and systems issues. I began working on my MBA in eCommerce since GTE paid 100% books, fees, and tuition. However, GTE was acquired by Bell Atlantic to form Verizon.
I was laid off right before Sept 11, 2001 and as you can imagine, that was the worst time I could have gotten laid off. However, I have learned that everything happens for a reason. I was laid off for a year and a half because no companies would touch me with an MBA - they thought I was overqualified. I did not understand and cried out to God and asked why He did not want me to work. I found out later it was for several reasons. He wanted to draw me to Himself, He wanted me to give up some garbage that I had allowed into my life (sins) and He wanted to take me to a higher place - to a job I really loved.
I really did not want to throw away my IT experience and schooling and ended up finding a job doing new business development for a Dallas IT Consulting/Staffing firm. Studying Brian Tracy’s materials along with a CD set given to me by my cousin’s husband, Bryan Flanagan (director of corporate training for Zig Ziglar) helped me to make my first placement/sale in my first 60 days in a horrible economy. Although things did not work out with that particular company, I found what I loved to do - IT Consulting sales and recruiting.
I began to study success motivation and self-help books, tapes, CDs, and DVDs by Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy, Vic Johnson, Napoleon Hill, Jack Canfield, Bob Proctor, and others. I read a book called “The Secret of Success” by R C Allen that literally changed my life. The premise of the book is that God and “Not my will be done but Thy will be done” was actually the secret of success. Implementing the principles that I learned allowed me to bring in revenue of $1M in 2006 to the company I was with. However, because of my faith and Biblical principles I have learned, I could not agree with some of the practices of this company - many of them seemed to me a little less than ethical. My coaches told me to start my own company and get away from the company I was with before they hurt my reputation in the Dallas marketplace. I did start my company, but while I was planning the transition, they decided to close the Dallas office I was over. I launched my company ProVisionTech with the help of my mentor the next day and have never looked back.
I started The Secret of Success website on the premise of that R C Allen book I read that changed my life. I believe that the success principles I am continually learning will enable me to build a multi-million dollar company over the next few years that will serve my clients well and glorify God. I am learning about persistence, how to overcome obstacles, and everything I can about building a business.
I am glad to be in this success journey together with you all.
Blessings in your success journey,
